The test lab is an engineering laboratory where testing is conducted. The test lab is also a physical location.
What items will we need to operate test lab? I try to put together a sample inventory list.
Furnishings
Copiers and Printers. Test lab needs its own printer (shouldn't count on using test printer). Having a small copier
isn't a bad idea, either.
Benches, Desks, Stools, Chairs.
Mouse Pads and Static Pads. Need a few static pads to minimize the possibility of static-discharge damage to hardware.
Layout. Keep a lab space in mind the kinds of tables and equipment racks need to install. Remember
to leave enough open space to allow people to come and go freely.
Climate Control. The test lab must have sufficient air conditioning and
heating to preserve a stable, normal operating temperature and humidity for testers and equipment.
Fire Safety and Prevention. Every workplace should have a smoke or fire detector, either
battery powered or backed up by a battery, and this detector must be tested regularly.
Software
Operating systems. We will need a wide representation of significant operating
systems, which will be used primarily for compatibility testing. The list on the following page provides an example:
· Sun Solaris
· UnixWare
· Microsoft Windows95/98/2000
· Microsoft Windows NT Workstation
· Microsoft Windows NT Server
Applications. We will want a variety of software applications for compatibility
testing and also for use on tester workstation a typical assortment of applications might include the following:
· Microsoft Office Professional Edition
· Netscape Navigator
· Internet Explore
· Some kind Bug Tracking System
· Visio 2000
Hardware
Modems/Network Cards. We will need a fairly wide variety of modems and network
cards to test servers Each card should be different in order to get as much coverage as possible. A topical set
might include the following:
· IBM 56K modem
· Zoom 56K faxmodem
· 3COM ISDN LAN modem
· Intel PRO/10
· D-Link Ethernet
· Intel PRO/100
· IBM Token ring
Data storage. In addition to items such as an Iomega external Jazz drive
and an HP SureStor DLT, we will need a fairly complete contingent of hard drives and other options
Reference Platforms. When we are conducting tests, the priority assigned to
a bug often depends on whether the same failure occurs on multiple industry-standard platforms, such as Dell Inspiron,
Micron Millennia, Compaq ProLiant.
Printers/scanners. Printers and scanners are not typically a source of hardware
trouble, but we will find items such as the following useful for verifying the functionality of parallel, serial,
infrared, and USB ports:
· Epson FX-880
· HP Office Jet
· HP Desk Jet
· Epson Perfection
Reference Materials
The Classics. For every kind of testing, a small set of books defines
the current best practices.
Standards. If industry or government standards apply to any of systems under test, need to have
up-to-date editions of these standards available.
Our lab setup can additionally contribute to productivity by ensuring that at least one network workstation is
available to those working in the lab. This workstation should provide testers with access to the bug-tracking
database; test tracking spreadsheet, the system configuration-tracking database, and any other reporting and information
resources the testers need to execute the test and report results efficiently.
